Myself and a couple of the chaps at work were discussing modding cars this lunchtime. A debate ensued!

What is the definition of modding?

One of the blokes has a 206 with lots of chrome bits stuck on. Headlight surrounds, door handles, washer jets; you know the sort of thing I mean?
This, we argued was not modding, but accessorising. (a lot of accessorising!)

The other bloke has also got a 206, he has cut down the springs to lower it, rusted the bonnet, made his own headlight brows from scratch, stripped and repainted the alloys, custom built boot install, smoothed boot lid, door cards covered in some frankly shocking material, etc etc. All done by his own good hand, all scratch built. Not perfect, but all his own work.
This, we argued, is proper modding!

These two cars were very easy examples of modding vs accessorising.

So what do you lot think?
Is it modding if it's just parts you bought off the shelf and bolted on?
Is it true modding if you haven't done it yourself? (this triggered another debate, done or designed by your self?)
Can you truly call your car 'modified' if it looks like it's been involved in a ram raid at Halfords?

When does the accessory become a modification?

To my mind anything over and above factory spec, including manufacturers options, is modding.  That's how insurers see it, and that'll do for me.

The difference between, say, stick on chrome tat and a tasteful and ceverly designed dash PC installation, is simply one of taste and ingenuity.

I wonder if anyone has modded their car with Vamps' alloys, of if they're on ebay?

I thought one of the requirements to be a member was to no longer own a C1/107/Gaygo!?  Grin

Just done a 750 mile weekend round Cornwall (chased a yellow 107 thinking it might be you!) and a trip to central London and back. Faultless!
Apparently part of the joy of Alfa ownership is not knowing if you'll make it home or not! Smiley

Its buying a scooter, wearing a parker and a drainpipe suit and listening to ska isn't it.

Deleberatly rusting a peugeot bonnet - not something you would have needed to do in the 70s.
