All the 'road kit' doesn't need to be the genuine parts rights? Any headlamp, indicators . . . from any model of bike are fine right??

What's SVA?

According to the internet, you can get a "daylight MOT" which means you don't need lights. Not sure if there is any truth in this though.

You can get a daylight MOT. This allows you to ride during bright daytime conditiond without the need for lights. It is legal, but a bit of a grey area.
If you are thinking of making a TY250 road legal, forget it. If you try and use one on the road you will be very diapointed. They are designed for trials and will only do 45-50mph flat out. If you want a good reliable bike to use on road and for green laning, you need a Honda XR250 or a Yamaha DT250. They are indestructable, spares are cheap, they are cheap to buy, and are great off road. They can also be used as a winter commuter due to their useability.
Don't try and use anything bigger off road, a 250 is plenty, a decent 125 2stroke is also good fun. I learnt this lesson the hard way, and have the scars to prove it. If you want to try your hand at green laning, and you can find somewhere legal to ride, a nice little 250 is the way to go.

S'true, but it'll have to go through SVA 1st anyway before you can register it, as it won't simply be a case of getting a normal, though perhaps foreign market, bike registered.

Lights etc will need to be E marked AFAIK.

some manufacturers sell proper road upgrade kits for some models, but I couldn't tell you which and what.

This is true -any trial bike is designed for one purpose only. Its not road riding

I had both trail & trial bikes at one time. The seat on a trials bike is there just as protection for your 'Ring' not to be sat on. You can of course if your travelling to some off-road playground but it is uncomfortable and you feel pretty foolish. I found in practise I could do as much on a trails bike as I could on the trials plus they are amazing good fun as road bikes as long as you don't use motorways too much. Don't need to look further than a Honda XR250 IMHO

I've had an R80GS, a 750 Super Tenere and a KMX125.  I do like the trailies, but my fat qed swamps the smaller ones.

The beemer especially was wrong in every way, yet somehow so 'right' at the same time.  An example of character overcoming the vast mechanical and design failings.

I test-rode the GS80 and must admit I liked it as a road bike with a little bit of un-metalled thrown in. Very popular mount for the London - Land's End Trial, through looked quite a handful unless you were a mountain of a gay guy.

My lingering memory was of a dire front brake.  Gripping the disc with my hand would probably have stopped me quicker.

Quirky though.  Mine was one of the later Paralever models, but rev it hard to accelerate and the back and would pump up.  Rev it st the lights and it'd try to spit you off as the torque reaction tried to roll the bike over.  Happy days though.

The XTZ750 had the most uncomfortable set of any bike i've ever sat on, and that includes torture bikes in viscious dominatrix's bedrooms.

Spit u off is probably a bit extreme.

The lifting of the tail is quite as it means the front will only come a few inches off the road if thrash it of the line.

Finished painting the Fizzers frame today.  A few weeks to cure, then it's jiggy with the 1500 grit and the T-Cut.  By christ though, it was a pain.  Next time I'll just get it blasted and powder coated.

Once done I gotta collect the rebuilt front forks, pull my finger out and get the fronth tyre removed/wheel blasted/wheel repainted/tyre refitted, then with the front end back on I can pay some peasant to manhandle the engine back in.

If I ever save the cash I'd like the get the Mad Max painted to match, but when I start wafting the archaeologists brush over the XS I'll keep it stock, if it can be done without going silly on the budget.  It'll only be worth £1.20 when finished, so it'd be barmy to spend much over £500 or so.

Then I fancy an XJ550 for a resto.  A friend of mine owns chassis number 000004, beleived to be the oldest XJ left alive, and they're sweet little lightweights.

Yamaha all the way man!!!

The frame etch primed, red oxide primed, filler primed, and hi-build primed as required, then rubbed down...

And the frame painted...

Despite wearing a mask, I'm rather stoned from inhaling 3 cans of PJ1's finest frame paint!

Gonna let it dry for a few weeks, then some fun ahead rubbing it down and polishing it up to the final finish.

But an XS250!!??

Some things really don't deserve to be resurrected!! (And I speak as one who has resurrected more than my fair share of things I shouldn't!)

I had an XS 250 many many moons ago. Bought it as a winter hack and loathed it with a passion!! Although it didn't ever succumb to my attempts to kill it! I used to leave it parked with the keys left in the ignition, and it was always there when I got back, mocking me with its undesirability!
I sold it to a bit-part actor in Bognor. He had an audition for a part in Eastenders as a motorcycle courier and thought it would help him if he was able to say he had his own bike!
