Well, you can't wait until fossil fuel runs out before starting new transport propulsion systems.; there has to been some handover period and it ain't gonna be six months: more like twenty years. The electric car even as it stands now is viable in cities. They should be part of an intergrated transport system based on something like the Oyster Card where you hire time to move rather than buy the transport yourself whether its a tube train/bus/bike/rollerblades... or an electric car

Even if it is viable in cities, its no answer.  Powering a car using electricty made from coal serves only to move the problem from the pumps to the power station.  The emissions, and finite-fuel supply life remain.

It'll be some genuinely new technology or breakthrough, not this stupid messing around with electric cars that have created more emissions before they even turn a wheel, than a petrol car uses in its lifetime.

Your moaning about electric cars per sa when you should be moaning about where they get their power from.

Indeed Soffit, an element of truth there.  We could have a single wind turbine on every acre of suitably flat land in the UK and still would not have enough capacity for our domestic energy needs, so someone needs to come up with some answers sharpish.  Nuclear is 'clean' in that sense, but expensive and politically unpopular, so a major change of poerpective is required from all quarters before that'll happen.

An electric car that causes more pollution during its production than a paterol car does in it's lifetime completely negates its reason for existance.

I'm not saying leccy may not be the future, but its going to require a big-O technical breakthough combined with economic and political changes before they are viable, and can be powered with 'clean' electricity.

Til then I see the short term as lighter and more refined small petrol engines, and diesel-hybrid technology for bigger ones, and it'll stay that way until things get so dire or economically unacceptable that nuclear becomes financially attractive and accepted by the wider public.  Cake and eat it won't work, cos there ain't enough wind, waves and sunlight to supply our ever burgeoning energy needs.
