I guess everyone knows that the maximum size rubber that can be fitted to the standard wheels is 165's right?

If you dont want to go to the expense of a set of alloys just yet, I have the solution!

You need a set of steel wheels from another suitable car. Almost anything from Toyota that has the 4x100 stud pattern will fit. The standard wheel is only a 4.5j. That means its 4.5 inches wide. Thats why the width of the rubber is limited. The centre of the Toyota wheels have the right 54.1mm space to fit exactly onto your hubs. You should look for a 5j or 5.5j to enable you to fit bigger rubber.

The big benefit of this is that the track of the car (width between the wheels) becomes wider which greatly improves the handling, and you will obviously have more grip if you fit wider tyres.

I bought a set of 5.5j 14" wheels from a Toyota Starlet GT off ebay, complete with 185/55/14 tyres (half worn) for far less money than a set of alloys, (they are for sale by the way due to my new alloys)

This is a great way to improve the look of your car without breaking the bank! They fill the arches out much better than the standard wheels and tyres. Gives the car a far nicer stance on the road.

Les,
Just seen these on the internet car boot(Ebay). The offset is 42?? Would these fit? They would make a cheap set for somebody.

Yep they will. Might need a spacer though to clear the suspension with that offset. Easily obtained though. Dont think its that cheap though, you can buy sets with tyres for about £300 ish!
