Nice find Steve. Nothing like another pat on the back. Well done us. We may have only bought it but we are just as essential as the designer Grin

We've had a thread about this before, but it's still nice to be reminded what a little gem the engine is.

We know how good the 107/Aygo/C1 engine is, but how did the Prius engine win an award? From most reviews I have read, it gets nowhere near it's claimed ecomony figures.

Mind you, neither did the engine in my 107. Smiley

Come to think of it. Did anyone see the thing they did on 5th Gear with the Polo Bluemotion? They gave it to one of the presenters family for them to use in more of a real world scenario. They went on a big family trip in it at one point and covered a lot of miles. They only managed in the mid 40's on economy. The claimed combined economy figure for it is over 70 mpg ...

Big problem with the Poomotion.  In order to make it light enough to generate sufficiently low emissions to pip in to the UK free tax band they have shorn ot if every accessory - stereo, aircon, electic windows etc are all optional extras.  By the time you've specced all this you're paying the think end of £14k for a car that won't now meet the economy figures by virtue of gaining 150kg in weight.

Cunning chaps at VW. Equally the 107 with it's air con on all the time would be out of the current tax band? The emissions should rise by 10% I guess.

Well there is an air con version of the Polo Blue Motion that bumps it into the same tax band as the 107. Dunno if air con is available as an option on the version withough though.

I suspect they do the emissions of the model provided by the manufacturer. I you wish to add a washing machine and spin dryer later your road tax/emission rating won't change. Cheesy

And who's gonna pay £12k + for a Poo motion in order to get free road tax, when a specced to the gills 107 costs £8k?  Thats over 200 years you'd need to keep the Poomotion in order to recoup the saving you'd make on road tax. Duh.

Have you been in a small VW lately, Dogs?  Seats like park benches.

The 107 may be austere, but it's far from uncomfortable.

That's why we bought a 107, cos it's a cheap small city car, the Polo, Fiesta etc type cars seem get bigger and more expensive with every new version.
Also 107 options list very easy, basic = Urban lite, bit o luxury, practicality and safety = Urban, full fat = Move and Sporty = XS, anyway that's my take on it.

I mentioned this newsflash 2 days after the competition on my blog last year.

The comments about "our" engine:

“Quite simply the smoothest three-cylinder engine that I’ve ever experienced”
Jake Venter, CAR, South Africa

In 2007, the honour in the Sub 1-litre category at the International Engine of the Year Awards goes to the Toyota 1-litre three-cylinder petrol engine found in the Aygo/Citroën C1/Peugeot 107 triplets, plus the Yaris/Echo/Vitz.

The Toyota 1-litre is said to be the lightest internal combustion engine on sale today. Weighing 69kg, its designers employed an all-aluminium construction and made the throttle body and fuel pipe out of resin instead of metal. Meanwhile an extra-small cylinder bore-to-bore distance makes for a very compact engine block – the wall thickness between the bores is just 7mm, thinner than on any other Toyota engine – and the air intake system and engine cover are integrated into a single unit, a design first for the Japanese firm.

With 67bhp and 93Nm at 3,600rpm, the engine has impressive power and torque for a 1-litre. And with a potential 4.6L/100km (61.4mpg), the powerplant also has the lowest combined cycle fuel consumption for a petrol engine in its segment.

Key to achieving these figures is the adoption of VVT-i variable valve timing, which Toyota says is the most advanced such system in the segment. In addition, a new resin coating for the pistons, thin, low-tension piston rings and the three-cylinder configuration all contribute to the decrease in friction losses.

Judge Ken Gibson from The Sun newspaper in the UK described the engine as, “A modern engine for the real world. It may only be a 1-litre but this engine has real character, surprising performance and great economy.”
