Do Hybrid cars contain lead batteries?

The Toyota Prius, Honda Accord Hybrid, Honda Civic Hybrid, Honda Insight, and the Ford Escape Hybrid, all use 42 volt lead battery systems that are much larger than a conventional 12 volt battery. In addition, all Hybrid cars and SUVs on the market have a second nickel-metal hydride or lithium-ion battery.

Aside from tailpipe emissions, lead batteries have the most detrimental environmental impact of any part of an automobile. Every car made today contains approximately 27 pounds of lead - most of which is in the battery[1]. Lead batteries are also widely used for forklifts, golf carts, and for backup power in the computer, solar, and telecommunication industries.

Inefficient production and recycling operations release tons of lead into the environment. During battery manufacturing and recycling operations, lead is melted and resulting fumes are released into the air. This toxic metal is then available for human absorption while airborne, before settling in dust and soil. Lead contamination persists in dust and soil and is often the most significant route of exposure .

In addition, environmental contamination of ground and surface water may also occur. Lead from these sources is bioaccumulative and has significant adverse impacts on all species. This natural resource is being widely used in this unsustainable manner with implications for the health of natural ecosystems and humans. Consider the following facts:

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 120 million people are over exposed to lead (approximately three times the number infected by HIV/AIDS) and 99 percent of the most severely affected are in the developing world.[2]

Over three-fourths of all lead production goes into batteries.[3]

lead doesn't make you dumb unless you ingest it (eat or drink it).  Breathing the miniscule quantites they used to put in petrol (and still do, albeit in far smaller concentrations) is far less harmful than the highly carcinogenic benzine they sue instead these days.

If it is, I wouldn't want to think about the consequences of making an engine run on air alone!

Actually an Air Powered Car is being released in August 2008.  No Bull!

Car Manufacturer Tata is to start selling these.

Heres an Article on it

www.popularmechanics.com/automotive/new_cars/4217016.html

and a BBC video of it done a couple of months ago

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oSwlTqaM1oA

Ok, so there not the best looking vehicles but because of the simplicity, some of the design proposals look really cool.

I remember being in the States years ago when "celebrities" (Baywatch "actors") were all extolling the virtues of their "pollution free" cars.

Erm, where does the leccy come from then ?

Like some of the tree huggers at work with their fancy commuter bikes - "seen how many tons of ore you need to extract to make your exotic alloy frame ?"

It's not exactly progress, using a Scooby engine, when several GT4 Celica variants topped 300bhp over a decade ago.

But they sound rather nice.

Lead has never done me any harm and I must have breathed in tons of the stuff. Mind you the kids have two heads each but thats normal for Yorkshire
