ok here's a copy of a message i sent to a frustrated member:

I keep upping the bandwidth limit by large amount, aprox 500mb a time. I can't keep upping it as I can't afford this site to run like it is. 100 members, and we are getting through over 2 gigs of transfer per month - that's insane. I've seen communities with thousands of members not get through 1 gig of transfer per month.

I need to go through the code on the site, work out where the bottle neck is. I'll have to limit attachments, and page views and all that crap, it will take time - time which I dont have, so for now we'll all have to put up with it. I understand the frustrations, but I feel them too.

The only thing I can think of is upping membership to £10, but I dont want to do this yet. I also dont see why the members should have to pay, but advertising only pays about a fiver per month so far. All the money i'm getting from memberships is going towards the stickers and sending them out.

So please be patient everybody, i'm sorry this keeps happening but you guys love this site, what can I say!

PS - for a decent server that prevents problems like this, we are talking about costs like £50 per month, which we definately cannot afford right now. Soon maybe.

I think the first thing you could do - which would help a great deal would be to kill the picture attachments.

I looked at my web statistics for my website where I'm hosting pics and video and there are 800 hits this month on the 107 page. This is only linked from the 107oc. I daren't even imagine what the traffic has been - I have removed the 4MB video.

I think if we all host our own pictures you stand a better chance of keeping the usage down.

cheers

That is very cheap, but I need to keep hosting on my account. I'll limit the attachment size, and just monitor the bandwidth more. I'll have to allocate more resources to this site, it doesn't really matter it just suprises me how much the site uses.

cheers

I just don't understand why the UK ISPs are charging so much for hosting websites and forums. Price for Internet connection (broadband) has come down quite a bit in the past two years, but the standard is still far from other developed countries.

I am paying around 15quids for a 8M connection plus cable TV in HK for my parents, whereas I only get a mere 1M with the same price with a download limit of 20GB. The institute that I am working in charges network connection 300quids a year in our section, that is just rediculous! Anyways........

I use uh-hosting (www.uh-hosting.co.uk) who charge £5.99/mo for 1gb disk space and 16gb transfer, and 1and1.co.uk, who charge £4.99/mo for 10gb transfer. (http://1and1.co.uk/xml/init/?k_id=10563364)

I think you're being ripped off!

You could try a donation bit were members can donate to try and keep the site running, I dont mind contributing a few quid here and there to keep it running.

Stoo I've been speaking with my boss (he's also my dad) and he's interested in sponsoring the site, but he would require a banner of some sort with a link to his companies site, he wants to know the costings etc and what sorta cash you would be talking about per annum

I've upped the limit again, this website is turning out to be quite expensive! But the memberships are paying for it just about. Don't worry.
