I don't think it's strictly legal, but I imagine you would be rather unlucky to get pulled over for it. One thing to watch out for however, is that if you do get pulled over for something else, they may well add it to the list should they choose to prosecute you.

An ex of mine got pulled over for having a funky plate - the officer just gave him a warning though and freely admitted that it had been a bit of a slow day!

Needless to say the ex didn't change his plate and never had any problems afterwards!

I think as long as it's readable they don't really care - it's when people use those awful looking script fonts that they start to get understandably annoyed!
